RAF Lakenheath has unveiled a striking heritage-painted F-15E Strike Eagle

The aircraft, F-15E Strike Eagle serial 91-0311, now wears the iconic camouflage scheme once carried by the F-111F Aardvarks that operated from RAF Lakenheath during the Cold War era. The special livery features a distinctive combination of tan and dual green tones, instantly recognizable to aviation historians and longtime enthusiasts of USAFE operations.

The commemorative paint scheme serves as a direct homage to the aircraft and crews of the 48th TFW who flew combat missions during Operation El Dorado Canyon in April 1986. The operation, conducted in response to Libyan-sponsored terrorism, saw F-111Fs depart RAF Lakenheath on a demanding long-range strike mission against targets in Libya. The mission became one of the most notable chapters in the wing’s operational legacy and cemented the “Liberty Wing’s” place in U.S. Air Force history.

While today’s F-15E Strike Eagles represent a far more modern generation of tactical airpower, the connection between the current 48th Fighter Wing and its F-111 heritage remains deeply rooted. By applying the classic camouflage pattern to a Strike Eagle, RAF Lakenheath bridges four decades of combat aviation evolution while honoring the airmen who flew the original mission.

The heritage jet stands out dramatically against the standard Gunship Gray finish normally worn by operational F-15Es. The earthy camouflage tones evoke a distinctly Cold War aesthetic, recalling an era when low-level penetration missions and terrain-following strike profiles defined NATO tactical aviation doctrine in Europe.

For aviation photographers and enthusiasts, the aircraft is likely to become one of the most sought-after special schemes currently flying in the USAF inventory. The combination of historical significance, aggressive Strike Eagle lines, and the rarely seen Southeast Asia-inspired camouflage makes 91-0311 an especially unique tribute aircraft.

Beyond its visual appeal, the paint scheme is also a reminder of RAF Lakenheath’s enduring role as a cornerstone of U.S. airpower in Europe. From the F-111F to the modern F-15E, the base has remained at the forefront of American tactical aviation operations for decades.

As the 40th anniversary of Operation El Dorado Canyon approaches, this specially painted Strike Eagle ensures that the legacy of the 48th TFW’s historic mission—and the aircrews who carried it out—continues to be remembered by a new generation of aviation enthusiasts.
